Starry Skies Vibes: Why We’re Going to get Mucky This Summer at Starry Skies Festival

Look to Starry Skies

If you’ve been following us for a while, you will know that one of our favourite past times is Festivaling.  Is that even a word? If not we’re claiming it.  Going to Festivals as a family is our way of spending precious time with each other! It’s also a way to experience a festival through Emerson’s eyes. His impression when he hears music ,and all the bright colours!  Or the way he chases a group of running children into the woods gives us pure joy.

Finding new festivals to attend is all part of the fun, and Living in the UK we’re spoilt for choice.  New events are popping up every year.  Each festival has it’s own personality, vibe and setting, and offers a totally different experience.  We’re making it our mission to try them all out, and one festival that we cant wait to visit is Starry Skies, which the epic Shambala team are behind.

Let’s get Mucky

With a tag line that reads “A gloriously mucky family camping holiday!” it has our name all over it. The team pride themselves on offering an intimate 4 day festival. Starry Skies is designed to give free-range kids and their grown ups a unique blend of the colourful family festival, and nostalgic camping life rolled all into one.
This years festival will be the 7th edition,  and takes place at the height of summer between 31st July – 4th August.  Set on a beautiful family farm in the Welsh village of Usk, which is conveniently just a trip down the M4 for us. We can’t wait to get exploring!!  The Starry Skies site offers rolling meadows, ancient woodland and an iron age fort for Emerson to conquer.

Best of Both Worlds

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, once you have kids festivals are a totally different experience. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the feeling that you’re missing out once the sun has set is quite apparent. It doesn’t help when you can hear the distant beats of a DJ whilst your putting the kids to sleep.

On the flip side we all crave time away from our hectic lifestyles where we can just relax and bond with the fam.  The Starry Skies, manifesto is the type of proclamation that we can get down with. They always wanted to eliminate that parental fomo but not lose the relaxation factor.  Sid Sharma, co-founder of both Starry Skies & Shambala festival explains their ideology;

“Starry Skies was born from our own realisation that going on holiday with the kids can turn into as expensive battle of endurance – and, once the sun goes down at a festival it can feel that everyone without kids is having a much better time.  With this in mind, we wanted to blend the best bits of both.  Seven years later we’ve created a really friendly community and many happy memories”

Starry Skies Promises

They’ve achieved this by combining the best bits of both festival and family holiday into one big event.  Starry Skies offer:

  • A proper sense of community and a chance for both you and your little ones to meet and bond with likeminded souls.
  • An incredible array of activities for young and old alike.
  • A chance to hang out with your pals and their kids around the campfire
  • Great live music
  • Delicious food (that you don’t have to cook!)
  • The chance to get an ice cold pint or delicious cocktail from a ‘proper’ bar

Just taking a look on the Starry Skies website, it is apparent that they have got the balance of keeping the kids entertainted, whilst keeping the adults suitably relaxed and sane – impeccably.

For the Adults

The Centre Camp Barn hosts DJ’s and bands that the whole family can enjoy.  BFLF will be in attendance keeping us entertained with their killer lineups, and the fancy dress disco is definitely something that is a bit of us.  Any excuse for a costume!   Starry Skies put the vote to the people, and the choice for the 7th edition’s theme is Fairy Tales & Nursery Rhymes, (Once Upon A Time in Starry Skies).  Any suggestions welcome, just put them in the comments.

Those who are seeking a bit of R&R should head to the Health and Healing area where you can choose between meditation or espresso martinis from the Whirled Cafe. (Or maybe both – now that is the true definition of Mind, Body & Soul.  I’ m looking forward to getting a holistic massage in one of the treatment pods, and getting my downward dog on at one of the many yoga sessions.  We’re also going to try out some Forest Bathing, which sounds divine!

For the Kids

Don’t think its all parties, cocktails and adult ‘Me’ time!  There are so many activities for the children to get involved in, that are included in the ticket price.  I love how the Starry Skies website sets activites out by age, so you can get a quick snapshot on whats available for each age group.  We know that Emerson is going to be all over the water fight, Inflatafun, and as a regular on the rave scene we’re pretty certain he’s going to be cutting shapes in the Camp Barn for  Big Fish Little Fish.

For the older kids they can temporarily join the circus at  Bigtopmania, where they can learn trapeze, and pick up some tricks at the daily circus shows.  Or, perhaps Axe Throwing & Archery is more of their bag? I also can’t express how happy we are that we finally got round to watching The Greatest Showman last week.   We are now suitably schooled, and ready for the Greatest Showman Flashmob.

Watching it come true, it’s taking over you.. this is the greatest show!

Get us to the FarmThe important thing is that everyone switches off from daily pressures and has nothing but good old family fun, with a bit of dirt and marshmallows thrown in!   We’re really excited to be joining the Starry Skies community this year.

If you do fancy coming down to the farm make sure you get your tickets quick, as understandably they are very close to capacity.   One last thing to note is that if you’re part of a larger group, you can get your 10th ticket free with the all new “camp circles system”.  This initiative is new for 2019, and not only will “Circles” benefit from a pre-marked space, but they will also get a bottle of fizz and fire wood to get the festivities going from the get go.

We can’t express enough, how amazing festivals are for children!!  It is truly amazing what one short weekend can do for a child’s development.  In a world of TV, Smart phones, and racing technology getting back to nature really does do wonders for Em’s social skills, and our soul!  We hope to see you all in Usk.
